Health Tests

Health

I conduct all the relevant health testing for Pomeranians - all of my foundation dogs have been genetically tested and have had a full breed analysis through Orivet. My dogs are checked at least annually at the vet, with all the most vulnerable points examined (eyes, ears, etc.). Diet is also extremely important - I ensure they are eating right, evaluating the feed and seeing its impact on the dogs. All puppies will of course come wormed, vaccinated, and micro-chipped, as per legislation. Importantly, my pups do not leave until three months old, to make sure they have had the best start.

Core Tests

There is 1 health test which I believe is most important to conduct for the Pomeranian.

Patellar Luxation

Dogs affected by patellar luxation have loose kneecaps that may pop in and out of the knee joint, which can be painful and even require surgery. Having a vet examine breeding dogs for patellar luxation can confirm the dog is not affected, and that their puppies are less likely to develop the condition. Patellar luxation is more common in smaller breeds.

Pomfire Pomeranians conducts 3 additional tests available for the Pomeranian

  1. Globoid Cell Leukodystrophy (GCL) is a genetic lysosomal storage disorder that causes neurological problems. It can affect several breeds including Cairn Terriers. There is a DNA test available to identify if a breeding dog is carrying this condition.
  2. Hyperuricosuria (HUU) is a genetic disease that causes a build-up of uric acid in the urine, predisposing to painful bladder and kidney stones. It can occur in a range of breeds. There is a DNA test available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this disease.
  3. Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA) in dogs is a type of genetic eye disease causing deterioration of the retina and eventually, blindness. There are a variety of sub-types of PRA, which can occur in various breeds. There are various DNA tests available to identify whether a breeding dog is carrying this condition.
